Lisandra Guerra

MOSCÚ, 16 dic (PL). — After a spectacular win in the Women’s 500m Time Trials at the World Cup Track Cycling tournament in Moscow, Cuba’s Lisanda Guerra dedicated her victory to the Cuban Five, imprisoned in the United States for fighting against terrorism.

The Cuban women had a stellar performance at the weekend cycling event with one gold, two silvers and one bronze medal in the four categories in which Lisandra Guerra and Yoanka Gonzalez competed.

Lisandra took the gold in the 500m event defeating four time world champion Natalia Tsylinskaya of Belorussia who also tops the current global rankings. To defeat Tsylinskaya, Guerra had to break her own personal record with 34.336 seconds. Her average speed was 52.423 km/h, unbeatable for her rival who had won the 200 meters sprint on Saturday with Lisandra as runner-up.

After winning, the athlete from Matanzas moves up to fourth in the world rankings. Lisandra told the press that on four occasions she has faced the Belorussian, who she called a great athlete with a lot of experience and class. She said the race went well and that her greatest difficulty was at the start, "after that I kept up the speed at all times and that gave me this important victory, my biggest since I began competing at the top level."

Lisandra, the world juvenile champion in 2005, began in the World Cup competition this year in France where she won a bronze medal.

Meanwhile, veteran Yoanka Gonzalez of Villa Clara, came in second in the difficult Points Race only surpassed by Giorgia Bronzini of Italy. She then took the bronze medal Sunday in the Scratch event behind Analiza Cucinotta of Italy and Lesya Kalitovska of Iceland. Gonzalez is now ranked fifth in the world. Her teammate, Yumari Gonzalez, who finished fourth Sunday, in the 10 km Scratch race, is ranked sixth.

The next World Cup Track Cycling event takes place in Los Angeles, California from January 19 to 21.
