Ottawa, Sep 23 (Prensa Latina) Canadian customs officials on Sunday denied the entry of U.S. pacifist Stansfield Smith, who was going to participate in a meeting and people´s court organized in Toronto (southeast) on the case of five Cuban antiterrorist fighters.

According to a message from Smith, to which Prensa Latina had access, Canadian authorities also banned him from entering the country over the next one and a half year, without elaborating on their decision.

The activist said that the guards stopped him on the border checkpoint of Port Huron-Sarnia and interrogated him about the purposes of his visit to Canada.

After responding that he would attend a meeting on Cuba in Toronto and would return to the United States on Monday, he had to park his car and give the same explanation to other customs officials, who took him to an office.

According to Smith, a female official asked him similar questions and refused to verify on the Internet the holding of the assembly and people´s court on the legal case of Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez, who are known internationally as the Cuban Five.

Finally, they prevented him from entering Canada after they checked his personal data.

The U.S. pacifist wondered why if Canada has relations with Cuba, it is concerned about his participation in the two solidarity meetings, held from Friday until Sunday at the City Hall of Toronto.

Smith is a member of the Chicago Committee for the Release of the Five, and was one of the promoters of the protests against the summits of the G-8 and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in May.

He had planned to join the activists from several countries gathered in Toronto to break the media silence about the Cuban Five, who were sentenced to long prison terms in the United States for monitoring the activities of Miami-based groups, whose violent actions have taken a toll of over 3,400 lives in Cuba over the past 53 years.

Participants in the two meetings will approve an action plan to demand that U.S. President Barack Obama release the Five immediately and unconditionally.

The document will also aim to pressure the Canadian government to join the international call to Obama to use his constitutional faculties to release the Five and send them back home.

Ottawa, 23 sep (PL) Funcionarios de la aduana canadiense negaron la visa de entrada al pacifista estadounidense Stansfield Smith, quien se dirigía a la asamblea y el tribunal popular organizado en Toronto (sureste) sobre el caso de cinco antiterroristas cubanos.

Según un mensaje de Smith, al cual accedió Prensa Latina, las autoridades también le prohibieron el ingreso al país durante un año y medio más sin aportar ningún argumento.

El activista relató que los guardias lo detuvieron en el punto limítrofe de Port Huron-Sarnia y lo interrogaron acerca de los propósitos de su viaje a Canadá.

Tras responder que asistiría a un evento en Toronto sobre Cuba y regresaría mañana a Estados Unidos, tuvo que aparcar su automóvil y dar la misma explicación a otros aduaneros, quienes además lo condujeron hacia una oficina con todas sus pertenencias.

Según Smith, la funcionaria de ese departamento hizo preguntas similares y se negó a comprobar en Internet la realización de la asamblea y el tribunal popular para difundir irregularidades en el proceso legal de Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González y René González.

Finalmente, le impidió entrar a Canadá después de chequear los datos personales.

El antibelicista norteamericano se preguntó por qué si Ottawa mantiene relaciones con La Habana le preocupaba su participación en ambas citas solidarias, abierta desde el viernes hasta hoy en el ayuntamiento de Toronto.

Smith es miembro del Comité de Chicago por la liberación de Los Cinco -como se conoce internacionalmente a los luchadores cubanos- y fue uno de los promotores de las protestas contra las cumbres del G-8 y de la Organización del Tratado del Atlántico Norte en mayo pasado.

Tenía previsto sumarse a activistas de varios países con el fin de romper el silencio mediático en el caso de esos hombres, sometidos a severas sanciones desde septiembre de 1998 por monitorear grupos violentos radicados en Miami que planifican acciones como las que en los últimos 53 años han ocasionado más de tres mil 400 víctimas en Cuba.

Los asistentes a ambas citas prevén elaborar hoy un plan de acción para exigir al presidente estadounidense, Barack Obama, su libertad inmediata e incondicional.

El texto también buscará presionar al gobierno de Canadá a sumarse al llamado internacional para que Obama haga uso de sus facultades constitucionales y autorice la excarcelación de Los Cinco y el regreso a su tierra natal.
