Antonio Guerrero: "There are no words to describe the nobility and integrity of Gerardo"

Dear friends:

This Monday, June 4, in a violent penitentiary where he is serving an unjust sentence, Gerardo adds another anniversary to his life.

Yesterday I took hold of a book of poems, by Rimbaud, where, as has happened at other times, it came to rest miraculously in my hands (there are few poetry books here and in general, Spanish language books).

Soon I was suspended in one of the brilliant verses of his Illluminations.

I traveled to the cell of our beloved brother and wrote:

In a cell, there is a man, his firmness frustrates them and makes them tremble.
There is a clock that works, but time doesn’t matter.
There is a mirror and a small table with very difficult stories.
There is a cartoon to finish and a book to read.
There are some letters that give color to color, blood to blood
And life to life.
There is a list of loved ones, not imaginary loved ones
Who pass through the iron door
And speak with no response.
There is, finally, when one has courage and faith,
Freedom that lies in wait.

There are no words to describe the nobility and integrity of our brother, who never in his life ever harmed anything nor anybody, instead he has dedicated his life to save lives, sacrificing all the moments of infinite love that he could have lived together with his inseparable Adriana.

Queridos amigos:

Este lunes 4 de junio, en una violenta penitenciaría donde continúa cumpliendo una injusta condena, Gerardo suma un aniversario a su vida. Ayer leí un libro de poemas de Rimbaud que, como ha ocurrido otras veces, vino a parar milagrosamente a mis manos (no abundan aquí los libros de poesía y en general los libros en idioma español). No tardé en detenerme en unos de los geniales versos de sus Iluminaciones.

Viajé a la celda de nuestro querido hermano y escribí:

En la celda, hay un hombre; su firmeza los frustra y los hace temblar.
Hay un reloj que funciona, pero la hora no importa.
Hay un espejo y una mesita con historias demasiado espinosas.
Hay una caricatura por terminar y un libro por leer.
Hay unas cartas que dan color al color, sangre a la sangre
y vida a la vida.
Hay un elenco de amados y no amados fantasmas
que traspasan la puerta de hierro
y hablan sin ser respondidos.
Hay, al fin, cuando se tiene valor y fe,
una libertad al acecho.

No hay palabras para describir la nobleza y la integridad de este hermano nuestro, que nunca en su vida ha hecho daño a nada ni a nadie, más bien ha dedicado su vida a salvar vidas, sacrificando todos los momentos de infinito amor que pudo haber vivido junto a su inseparable Adriana.
